December 13, 2013 Hancock
Lorraine Diana Zagar passed away on December 13, 2013, at Houghton County Medical Care Facility, where she had been a resident since May 2013. She was 81 years old.
Lorraine was born in Painesdale on October 6, 1932, the youngest child of Mary (Krizmanich) and Slavko Zagar. She moved with her family to New Allouez at a young age and graduated from Calumet High School in 1952.
After graduation she worked at The Venice Café in Hancock and the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and also spent time on the East Coast before returning to her home in New Allouez. She like sketching designs of women’s fashions when she was younger and was quite good at it.
Lorraine’s greatest wish was to be able to live independently in the family home that she loved. She was able to do this up until May of this year, and Lorraine’s family wishes to thank her caring neighbors who kept a watchful eye on her. We especially thank Michael for his faithfulness over the years in taking care of her snow removal, lawn mowing, and any other errands that needed to be done.
Lorraine was preceded in death by:
-parents Mary & Slavko Zagar;
-brothers John, Anton, & Stephen;
-sisters Ann Hatala, Frances Rakich, and Margaret Slomka.
Lorraine is survived by:
-brothers Slavko John “Toot” Zagar of North Carolina, and Joseph (wife Doreen) Zagar of L’Anse;
-sisters Katherine “Dolly” Hawkins of California, and Rose Hatala of Mohawk;
-and several nieces.
A memorial service will be held for Lorraine in the Spring at Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
