LAURIUM — Russell E. Wirsu, 91, a resident of Laurium passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, in Orion, Michigan.
He was born May 6, 1926, in Calumet to Henry and Josephine (Arola) Wirsu.
He attended Calumet High School and graduated with the Class of 1944. Following high school, Russell enlisted with the United States Navy, serving in World War II. After being honorably discharged, he met his soon to be wife, Martha. On June 24, 1950, he married Martha Maki from Fulton.
Russell worked as a police officer for the Detroit Police Department for 25 years, and in 1975, he and Martha returned to the place they called home. Following retirement, he drove the shuttle for Stillwaters Assisted Living.
Russ was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Josephine; his wife, Martha; and his brothers and sisters, H. Clemens Wirsu, Theodore W. Wirsu, Lillian E. Wirsu Andrina, Viola J. Wirsu Koskiniemi, Edwin R. Wirsu, Ruth S. Wirsu and Ronald T. Wirsu and Roy Wirsu.
He is survived by his sons, Brian (Kathleen) Wirsu of Detroit and their daughter, Elizabeth Wirsu of Orlando, Florida; Richard (Delfina) Wirsu of Orion, and their children, Anthony Wirsu and Katherine Wirsu of Orion; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Rodney Johnson to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.
