Obituary for Audrey Fay Carlson (Koskiniemi)

Audrey Fay (Koskiniemi) Carlson of Lac La Belle left her loved ones on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. She was born in Detroit, MI on August 1, 1943, daughter of the late Harold and Edith (Niemi) Koskiniemi. She lived in the Copper Country most of her life except for four years in the Detroit area. Audrey attended the Public Schools of Calumet, graduating with the class of 1961. She also graduated from Suomi College Nursing Program with the class of 1990.

On November 18, 1961, she married Wendell Carlson at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Calumet. Audrey enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening and photography. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church of Mohawk.

Audrey was employed at Newberry's Dime Store and Laurium Super Valu in the bakery department. After graduating from Suomi College, she was employed as a registered nurse at Our Lady Of Mercy Convalescent Home in Hubbell. She was also employed at Keweenaw Home Nursing and Hospice, working with hospice patients. She was also a hospice volunteer and was Hospice Volunteer of the Year in 1996. Audrey won several awards in local baking contests and was one of the 100 chosen for Pillsbury's 19th Bake-Off in 1968, which was held in Dallas, Texas.

As a couple, she and her husband sailed over 35,000 miles on their sailboat, the Dawn Treader. They sailed on all of the Great Lakes, except Lake Ontario. Their children, Tracy and Bryon, also sailed with them for several summers.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wendell; daughter Tracy (Daniel) Farrand; son Bryon (Mila) Carlson; grandchildren Alexandra Farrand, Kristoffer Carlson, and Vanessa Carlson; and sisters June Wiley and Sandie Harjala.

Preceding her in death were her parents, sisters Shirley Ann Koskiniemi and Marie Gherna.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held at the Siskiwit Reception Hall in Calumet on Tuesday, May 15th, 2018 with visitation from 10 until Noon and a service starting at 12:00 Noon with lunch and fellowship to follow.
