Dennis Eugene Kangas, age 82, a resident of Hancock passed away on Thursday February 18, 2016 at UP Health System- Portage.
He was born on February 15, 1934 to Bill and Phoebe (Hoitola) Kangas in Hancock, Michigan.
On February 8, 1979 he married Carol Strom in Hancock.
Dennis worked in for the mining companies in the area, retiring from the White Pine Mine in 1998.
Dennis loved to go camping. He also loved to fish and had a boat. Together him and Carol also loved to go kayaking together. He also enjoyed taking saunas with his wife. He also enjoyed going out and metal detecting the many rock piles in the area.
He loved to visit with family and friends. While visiting with them he would make everyone laugh with his great sense of humor. He enjoyed having a few beers from time to time.
He was an avid reader of true crime novels. He also loved animals, and spent countless hours feeding the birds, rabbits, chipmunks, and neighborhood dogs. He had a special love for his cat, Kitty.
He was also a man of many talents. He taught himself to play many musical instruments. While Carol played the piano, he would often accompany her with his guitar, banjo, mandolin, accordion, and harmonica. He also loved playing guitar and mandolin with his daughter.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Phoebe, and a little sister Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Ken Toth to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday February 24, 2016.
