Obituary for Mary Catherine Newman (Demoss)

Mary Newman, 56, a resident of N. Cloverland Road in Calumet went home to be with the Lord on Sunday June 19, 2016.

She was born on February 23, 1960 in San Francisco, California, the sixth child to John and Hazel (Lapke) Demoss.

She graduated from South City High School in San Francisco, CA in 1978.

Mary became involved at Hillside Baptist Church in South San Francisco, serving in the nursery and playing on the church softball team. It was during this time she met the love of her life George Newman and they married on June 2, 1990 in California.

After getting married and moving to the Copper Country, Mary was employed for over twenty years at the Houghton Post Office, and was well loved by many people in the community.

Mary was passionately involved at First Baptist Church in Calumet. She served as a Sunday School teacher, singing in the choir, nursery, Awana director and helping with the college ministries. Mary’s house was always open and available to host her friends and family. She was an avid San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants fan. She also loved to play softball, football, volleyball and dominoes.

She was preceded in death by her father John Demoss.

Bob Demoss of CA

Nephews: Sean Demoss and Michael Guss
Nieces: Chrystal Potter and Natalie Demoss

Great Nephews: Levi, Liam and Aidan

She was a cherished member of the extended Gordon and Virginia Newman family.

Funeral services will be held in the First Baptist Church in Calumet on Friday June 24, 2016 at 3:00 PM with Pastor Tony Laidlaw to officiate.

Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM
