Obituary for James Paul McKinstry

James McKinstry, 53, a resident of Laurium passed away following a short illness on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at the Omega House in Houghton.

He was born on April 23, 1965 to Paul and Mavis (Wickstrom) McKinstry in Laurium. He attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1983.

Following high school, James began working for MK Construction. He then went on to work as a sawyer with his brother-in-law, Robert “Boomer” Mattila at Mattila Logging.

James loved to go out fishing and snowmobiling. He also loved animals. He enjoyed spending time with his step-children.

On December 15, 1995, he was united in marriage to Lynn Karpinen in Houghton.

James enlisted with the Michigan National Guard in 1991. He was honorably discharged in 1992.

He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church.

He is preceded in death by his father, Paul McKinstry, his sister Lynn Mattila, his brother-in-law Robert “Boomer” Mattila, and his grandparents, Leo and Lucylle Wickstrom.

his step-children: Amanda Chevalier, Erica LaBeau, and Scott Walman
His step grandchildren: Garrett Chevalier, Trystyn Aleo, Alexis Aleo, and Ariana LaBeau

His Mother: Mavis McKinstry of Calumet
His Uncle: Marshall Wickstrom of Laurium
His nephew: Jacob Mattila of North Carolina

Per James’ request cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held at a later date.
