Obituary

Joseph P. Monroe, 66, a resident of Calumet passed away on Saturday June 8, 2019 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

He was born on November 29, 1952 in Lansing, Michigan to Maurice and Helen (Berger) Monroe.

He attended Webberville High School and graduated with the Class of 1971. Following high school Joe began working for a local gas station. He then went to work as a tool & die technician for Teledyre in Howell. While downstate he had his 2 children Becky and Joe Jr with wife Barb. He moved up to Eagle Harbor with his second wife, Sue. While up in the copper country he worked for Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and YSI. After retiring from YSI, He began working for Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center in the maintenance department. He retired from Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital this past August.
He found and fell in love with Andrea (Freeze) in 2015. Married her December 16, 2018.

Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fly fishing. He loved tying flies, loved spending time with his dogs and hunting for that perfect agate. He enjoyed spending time outdoors.

He was an avid gun collector, and would also make his own bullets.

Joe was known for his infectious smile. He always had a pocket full of lifesavers and fireball candies which were his favorite!

He enjoyed the people he worked with at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital during his afternoon shifts.

Joe was a member of the Eagle Harbor Township Fire Department and the Calumet Village Fire Department.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Helen Monroe, his brother, Mo Monroe, and his sister, Betty Kidd.

He is survived by:

His grandchildren: Joey, Parker, Michaela, Sydney, James, Reilly, Catie (Tyler) Kangas, Cory, Kristin, Kevin, Caroline, Richard, and Emma

numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Reverend Laura Eaton to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet on Saturday June 15, 2019 from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00.
A small luncheon will be served at the Calumet school commissary after the service.

Another memorial service will also take place in Williamston, Michigan at a future date where Joe will be laid to rest.

Thinking about you especially on this day of days, as you experience your Home Going with your immediate family and Keweenaw friends. I so wish I could be there with you and all of those who will be there to celebrate your life. There will be a grand celebration going on in heaven as your life is celebrated here, you know. You liked to pretend you were a curmudgeon, but we all saw through that with the kindness, generosity and smiles you strew around with abandon everywhere you went. I will miss our telephone conversations, and trips to the UP to visit you, and your willingness to drop everything to welcome me, and then Mary and I on our visits to see you throughout your stay in the Keweenaw. Hiking in the Porkies, and through the forest on the way to Montreal Falls and so many other places; your knowledge of, and willingness to share the geology of your adopted home all lay on my heart especially today. While I know that our time here has ended, I know that you'll be exploring heaven so that when I get there, you'll show me the most beautiful water falls, and hiking trails anyone would ever want to see. Go easy into your new life, little brother, I love you forever. Barb

The memory of our trekking throughout the Keweenaw will always be in my heart. Whether over the mountains or on the shore of Superior to find those illusive Montreal River falls. I so enjoyed our time together and you will forever be missed and in my heart. I love you little bro. Mary

We are so saddened by the loss of our coworker and friend Joe. Joe never was at a loss for a kind hello, a smile or a lifesaver when he work at the hospital. No matter what kind of day you were having , Joe brought a little bit of sunshine to it just by taking time to say hello . He always wished everyone a good day, or evening and you knew he truly meant it! Staff and patients alike loved Joe. Our sympathies are with Andrea and his family . You will be missed Joe.

How saddened we were to hear of Joe’s passing... our hearts are broken. Steve loved working with Joe as Joe “ was one of a kind”. Soft spoken, reliable, honest, someone Steve could count on. Steve often said” I Could never find another guy like Joe!” I too loved working with Joe....he was a wonderful guy....
he will be greatly missed~
