Allouez, MI – Katherine “Kate” Lantz Foster, 60, of Allouez, died Saturday, August 29, at Aspirus Hospital in Laurium, Michigan.

Born January 9, 1960, at the Portsmouth NH Naval Shipyard Hospital, in Kittery, Maine, she was the daughter of Margaret “Peggy” Driscoll Lantz of Portsmouth and the late Richard “Dick” Lantz.

As an Air Force “brat” she lived her growing years in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Alabama, New Mexico, Texas, and Michigan.

Graduating from South Lyon High School, Kate attended Northern Michigan University for a time and later earned her degree in Forestry, with honors, from Michigan Tech University where she also met the love of her life, Joe Foster.

After graduation and marrying in Copper Harbor, they moved to northern Minnesota for work, first to International Falls, where Kate worked for the Koochiching County Soil and Water Conservation District and County Assessor’s office. After that, a move to Eveleth, where she worked as Office Manager and a Certified Wetlands Technician for Northern Lights Surveying & Mapping, located in Biwabik, Minnesota. After eleven years in Minnesota, they returned to the Copper Country and made their home in Allouez.

As a teen in Prattville, Alabama, Kate loved horses and competed in horse shows winning metals in barrel racing, with her horse Tonka.

Kate enjoyed baking, gardening, sprucing up their home, and sharing fun times with their dogs throughout the Copper Country, especially at Eagle Harbor, which was also her home.

She is survived by her Husband (Joe), Mother (Margaret), Brother (Michael Lantz of Middleton, New Hampshire), Aunt (Mary “Bette” Driscoll of Portsmouth, New Hampshire), and several cousins.

Kate will be laid to rest at Pine Grove Cemetery in Eagle Harbor on Tuesday, October 6th with a grave side ceremony at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Copper Country Humane Society.

I was lucky enough to work with, and become friends with Kate, in the late 80’s when we both worked for the Soil District office. As 2 of the only women in a male dominated field, we bonded and both endeavored to show that we could hold our own. And we did. Kate was a knowledgeable, determined, hard worker and gave every project 100%. I was proud of the work we accomplished. We also had a lot of fun, especially in our work travels. To this day I tell stories of some of our escapades and they are always met with laughter from whomever I tell them too.

I was honored to be a bridesmaid in Kate and Joe’s wedding. Kate was a beautiful bride. Simply stunning.

We lost to touch over the years but I never forgot her.

Dear Joe and also Kate’s family, I send you my sincere condolences. The world has lost a beautiful soul. I wish all of you you peace in the days ahead.
