Obituary for Frederic Gaabo

June 28, 2022 Mohawk

Frederic (Fritz) Gaabo, 94, a resident of Mohawk and current resident of The Bluffs passed away on Tuesday night June 28, 2022 at the Omega House in Houghton.

He was born on January 6, 1928 in Mohawk a son of the late Louis and Sadie (Vanni) Gaabo.

Fred graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Fred was the first local soldier to return home and soon enrolled in Suomi College.

On September 25, 1954 he was united in marriage to the former Kathryn La Fore. Fred was always thankful he and Katie met and married. They had a wonderful life together and especially enjoyed wintering in Florida in later years. He loved his children and grandchildren and always appreciated the love and attention they showed him.

Fred worked at Gitche Gumee Oil Company in Ontonagon as a bookkeeper from 1958-1967. He returned to Mohawk and worked for Keweenaw Savings Bank, Merchants and Miners Bank and First of America until his retirement.

In his retirement years Fred enjoyed golfing at Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and Sandy Pebbles in Ahmeek. In his younger years Fred loved to play hockey and baseball.

He was a active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Mohawk and a life member of American Legion Post 230 of Mohawk. He served on the Keweenaw County Road Commission for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister Joyce Taivaloja.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years Kathryn

Grandchildren: Elizabeth (Bryan), Christopher (Ashley), John, Erin (Amir) and Bruce (Dania)
Great Grandchildren: Grace, Eli and Caitlyn

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 12:00 PM in the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Larry Molloy to officiate.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in the funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
