George Ellis Kargela March 25, 1936 - November 2, 2023

George Ellis Kargela, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 2, 2023, in Hancock, Michigan at Canal View. He was born on March 25, 1936, in Calumet, Michigan, to Elma and William Kargela.

George is survived by his loving wife, Karen Kargela, and their children: Shelli Kargela, Kurt Kargela (Lydia Kargela), and Dennis Kargela. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Whiton, and brother, Jack Kargela. George was a proud and doting grandfather to Ariel, Karlie, Emma, Ryder, Meghan (Reuben) Somero, Micah (Sarah), Amasai (Amber), Kenton, Klark, Kelvin, and Liahna, as well as eight great-grandchildren. His cherished dog, Tigger, was his loyal companion and best friend.

In addition to his immediate family, George is remembered by numerous extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, one sister, and two grandchildren.

George served in the Navy for four years and married his beloved Karen on March 3, 1962. He owned and operated George’s Standard from 1967 to 1978, and later worked for Michigan Tech University for two decades as a dedicated member of the grounds crew from 1978 to 1998.

George had a deep passion for sports, particularly the Detroit Tigers. He was a coach for Little League baseball, influencing and mentoring young athletes. His love for fishing, camaraderie over coffee at Burger King, and devotion to his family and grandchildren were central to his life. George was an avid horseshoes player, delighting in friendly competition with his father in law.

A memorial service to celebrate George's life will be held on Friday, November 10th, with a noon visitation and a 1pm service at Erickson’s Funeral Home. Following the service, there will be a coffee hour and time of remembrance at Siskiwit Reception Hall located in Calumet, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Canal View, where George was a resident for 4 years.

George Ellis Kargela will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his community, and his warm and welcoming spirit. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
