Stanley J. Cygan, 96, of Calumet passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.
He was born in Chicago, IL on August 6, 1913, son of John and Sophie (Pachol) Cygan, Polish Immigrants and attended the Chicago Schools. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in Rantoul, IL in 1933. He made his first parachute jump in October of 33. He transferred to the 72nd Bombardment Squadron in Hawaii and Graduated from the Army Air Corps Airplane Engine School at Luke Field, Territory of Hawaii in 1935. He was given the assignment of Air Mechanic on airplane #225. In a pistol shoot he scored seventh highest out of 60 men, a pistol expert. He also was a machinist at the Armertorp Corporation which built torpedoes for the Navy during WWII.
He was united in marriage to Mary Aurora Tarvis on April 23, 1938 and the couple moved to Calumet, her home town. Stan worked for the 665th Aircraft Control and Warning Systems in Keweenaw from 1950-1978. He also was a professional photographer his entire career, owning his own company, Kandid Kamera. Stan was an avid outdoorsman, he built a 18 x 38 log cabin at Mud Lake single handedly, he shot his last buck at the age of 91 and still went to deer camp in 2008.
He was a member of the NRA and the Local Foresters.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, two brothers, Joe & John and three sisters, Bertha, Anna & Mary.
Surviving are two sons, Ken (Nancy) Cygan of Gross Point Shores, Dollar Bay, Dennis (Leah) of Manistee, MI, six grandchildren, Laura, Nancy, Michael, Chris, Brian, Justin, seven step- grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, fourteen step-great grandchildren and two daughter in laws, Jean and Ginny.
A graveside memorial service for Mr. Cygan will be held at the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet in the summer. The Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family. Condolences can be expressed to the family at www.petersonfuneralservices.com
