Mary Lou Thomas, 92, a resident of Rockland Street, Calumet, passed away on Saturday May 9, 2015, at the Omega House in Houghton. She was a lifelong Calumet resident and felt at home here as nowhere else.
She was born on April 2, 1923 in Calumet, to her parents C. Gordon and Florence (Nelson) Larson. She attended Calumet High School and graduated in 1941.
She worked as a secretary at Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. where she met her husband, the late Thomas R. Thomas. They were married on December 29, 1973 in Calumet. Tom passed away on May 4, 1995, and although their time together was brief, she still cherished the years that they shared. They particularly enjoyed reading aloud to one another. She was an avid gardener, growing an amazing quantity and variety of vegetables in gardens she and Tom maintained devotedly. She had a special place in her heart for animals, having many pets and nursing many injured wild animals back to health. She took pride in her study of birds and her correspondence with the Cornell Department of Ornithology.
She is preceded in death by her husband, sister and parents.
Mary was survived by: her step-son T. Rowland Thomas of Louisville, Colorado.
And special friends: Rita Adams of Calumet, and Rhory Adams of Calumet.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday May 14, 2015 at 11:00 AMin the Lake View Cemetery Section D-2 in Calumet with Rev. Laura Eaton to officiate.
